Stroop
This task is part of suite of four tasks created for Kinarm researchers in Psychology. The tasks were developed by Dr. Kayne Park of the Boisgontier Lab at the University of Ottawa under a co-funded MITACS project.
This task quantifies cognitive inhibition and information processing speed. In the classic task, participants are asked to name the color of the ink in which words are written, but when the words are color names, the color of the ink may be different from that of the word (for example, the word "red" written in blue). Reaction times are measured for each response. The Kinarm variant of this task requires participants to reach to the congruent word/colour combinations.
Kinarm users may find the robotic platform offers a robust platform for discriminating small differences in response time. Further for those with Gaze-Trackers, a richer behaviour response can be quantified.
Detailed Description
The Stroop task was developed to assess cognitive interference by having participants respond to the colour of a word rather than the text of the word. This measures the ability to inhibit automatic responses to reach for text that is the same as a shown word and, instead, reach for the text associated with a colour of a shown word. Here, we examine the Stroop Effect which is the reaction time difference in responding to congruent (e.g. red colour-red word) and incongruent (e.g. red colour-blue word) trials.
The Kinarm variant is based on the computerized version found here: Mead, L. A., Mayer, A. R., Bobholz, J. A., Woodley, S. J., Cunningham, J. M., Hammeke, T. A., & Rao, S. M. (2002).
