Move brings manufacturing together with design and development teams

New signA dream long held by the BKIN team was finally realized today when the group completed their move to a new off-campus location on Railway St.  Just off Division St., in the heart of Kingston, the area allows the team to keep close physical proximity to their founder and collaborators at Queen’s University, while giving the team the “three-in-one” space that they needed: design, manufacturing and machining all under one roof in an affordable footprint.

U.S., Chinese patents issued for BKIN’s flagship technology

KINGSTON, ON — BKIN Technologies Ltd. is pleased to announce that its KINARM™ robotic assessment system has been granted three patents.

Two patents, for “Method and Apparatus for Assessing Proprioceptive Function,” were granted by patent offices of China and the United States, respectively.  The patents relate to the KINARM’s method and apparatus for detecting, quantifying, and/or treating impairments in processing sensory information relating to limb movements and motor control.  A U.S. patent was also issued for “Robotic Exoskeleton for Limb Movement.”

Road to Recovery: Ontario Brain Institute profiles KINARM project with Sunnybrook & Queen’s University

The on-line newsletter of the Ontario Brain Institute has profiled a collaborative project made possible by the partnership between the Ontario Brain Institute and the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), through the Technology Development Program. Allergan Canada Inc. (maker of BOTOX®) and BKIN Technologies Ltd. provided substantial in-kind and cash funding to enable this support.

Sunnybrook Research Institute also profiled the project.

KINARM inventor named to first-of-its-kind neuroscience research chair and wins prestigious national award for spinal cord research

Scott SMOL.2010BKIN Technologies Ltd. is pleased to announce that Dr. Stephen Scott, BKIN’s Chief Scientific Officer and inventor of its flagship technology, KINARM, has received two major awards for his pioneering research into understanding brain function and measuring the effects of brain injury.

Dr. Scott has been named Queen’s University’s first GlaxoSmithKline-Canadian Institutes of Health Research (GSK-CIHR) Chair in Neurosciences. The award enables him to continue his world-leading research into understanding brain function while at the same time translating his findings into real-world clinical tools.

KINARM giving Canadian Olympians a head start

BKIN’s robotic technology profiled in Maclean’s Magazine

The current issue of Maclean’s magazine (July 17, 2012) has profiled the research program of BKIN’s customer, the University of Calgary Sports Medicine Clinic. The group, headed by Drs Sean Dukelow, Willem Meeuwisse, and Brian Benson, is studying the use of KINARM for the objective assessment of sport concussion injuries. With the support of Own the Podium, the Canadian sports organization focused on Olympic athletes’ performance, injury prevention and recovery, the group used the KINARM to assess the baseline performance of over 300 Olympic and varsity athletes.   With the help of KINARM Standard Tests, the group has been able to objectively identify decline in brain function following a concussion.

Queen’s University world-leading research tool opens a window into the ‘black box’ of brain injury

Combining robotics, virtual reality and standardized tests, KINARM system enables researchers to ‘fingerprint’ the subtle effects of disease and injury on the brain

KINGSTON, ON – They were the first in the world to give researchers a bilateral robotic tool for understanding the fundamentals of brain function.

Now, their work bolstered by research results and the creation of a library of standardized tests, a Queen’s University neuroscientist and his spinoff company, BKIN Technologies Ltd.,  are launching their new, automated version of its KINARM™ system at  the world’s largest neuroscience conference this week in California.
